THIS ON THURSDAY

Hi Reader,
This heart looks pretty realistic to me. It's broken in a few places 💔, jagged in others, a bit worse for wear. And yet it's still vibrant, still beating. It's a heart that's done some living.
Our hearts are pretty amazing organs. They beat without conscious effort and they're capable of feeling and expressing so many kinds of love 🫶🏼.
But they're also capable of feeling so much pain and loss. And lately I feel like I've heard so many stories of emotional abandonment from both friends and acquaintances. People who feel when things were toughest for them, friends and even family ran for the hills.
"You think you know who your 👭🏼 friends are," one friend told me, "but go through a tragedy of some sort and that's when you really know."
So I've been thinking about the way we show up for others. Really show up 🫶. Not just with empathy. But also kindness.
Empathy isn't hard. We all feel badly for others. But how often are we actually showing up with kindness. Even if that means just sitting and letting someone pour her heart ❤️🩹 out to us.
Valentine's Day 🌹 gets relegated to the romantic love category. But it really should be about so much more.
We probably can't eradicate war, or even single-handedly repair wounded countries. But we are all capable of kindness, on a micro level.
We don't hesitate to reach that tall package for the elderly woman in the supermarket, but are we actually offering all we can to those closest to us in the way of kindnesses?
So maybe this Valentine's Day, in addition to the usual romantic celebration, we should consider the simple, loving kindnesses we could offer those around us.
This week's ♥️ post goes deep into just that.
