When a celebration isn't quite how you'd pictured it

Hi Reader

For me, wedding anniversaries and birthdays have two things in common. For the past few decades, both have fallen on the same day, and involve some planning. And for me, both should involve cake.

This year, my birthday*anniversary share a third thing . . . something I didn't plan for.

It seemed like a good idea at the time

Some time ago I realized that having my birthday and our wedding day share a date was a decidedly bad idea.

Why? Fewer celebrations, less cake. Two big days, merged into one. Celebrations aren't that frequent, so why not maximize the number of celebration days?

But this year, my thinking has been turned on its head. I found out just a few days ago I needed to have surgery. On my birthday. On our anniversary.

There probably won't be a lot of celebrating. There certainly won't be cake.

πŸ₯‚ And yet I am celebrating . . .

Here's what I am celebrating. I'm celebrating that I'm still around, and will be for some time. I'm celebrating a long marriage that's had its share of ups and downs, like most.

But mostly, I celebrate my husband. My biggest fan, my biggest supporter, my love. The man who's been the one beside me a lot of years. But mostly the last five. Our toughest. The man who's still here. And why this is perhaps the most under-recognized aspect of any long, devoted partnership.

Celebrations are important. And so is cake. So, once I'm home from the hospital, I will be expecting cake!

πŸ₯‚ Celebrate your enduring partnerships, wherever they may be.

🩷 Warmly, Susan

Create a life you love.
