✈️ The Surprising Benefit of Flying Solo

01.22.26 | THIS ON THURSDAY | #37

Hello friends,

I’ve been thinking about something small, and yet not really that small. Let me explain . . .

Every time I fly ✈️ alone (not on a big adventure, not necessarily on a “solo travel” trip, just a regular flight), I end up talking to someone. Not exchanging pleasantries. Actually talking.

Often it’s another woman 👩 around my age. We sit next to each other at the gate or end up side-by-side on the plane. One of us will say something ordinary. Maybe about the flight, the destination, the delay. And suddenly we’re sharing more than expected. Not everything. But more than I'd have guessed.

What’s funny is that for a long time, I didn’t think those conversations really counted. They were pleasant, sure. But fleeting. No follow-up. No story that continued. I used to wonder if they were worth the effort at all.

But somewhere along the way, I started noticing how much they stayed with me. And how some of them actually turned into real friendships 👩 👩🏻. This happened to me this past week. We were in an airport lounge awaiting flights. You'll laugh when you read what opened the door to this connection!

I write more about this, why flying alone seems to invite these moments, and why they feel especially meaningful in midlife. Also, how staying a bit more open changes the experience.

💡Try This

(No Flight Required)

The next time you’re waiting somewhere, an airport, a café, even a long line . . . try loosening your grip on your phone for a minute. Look up. Notice who’s around you.

You don’t have to start a conversation. Just leave room for one.

🩷 Create a life you love.

✏️ P.S. I didn’t expect this post to be about midlife, but it turns out that’s exactly what it’s about. Why these conversations happen now, and why they feel different than they might have years ago, surprised me most. You can read more here.
