Hi Reader,
I saw something on a walk a few days ago I haven't been able to stop thinking about.
I was walking around the lake across from where we live when I noticed an elderly couple coming toward me from the opposite direction on the path.
They weren’t saying anything. Their gait was slow, measured. Their eyes were on the ground, navigating the terrain. But just before they reached me, they suddenly veered right, toward the lake, onto the sandy beach.
I paused my walk, half expecting they were headed for the lake. A worrisome thought. They kept walking but not toward the lake. Instead, they veered in unison toward the swing set, off to the side.
He took her hand and they made their way across the sand. When they reached the first swing, he slowly he helped her onto the U-shaped seat. Once she was on, he proceeded to set himself carefully onto the swing next to hers.
But they weren’t resting. Instead, they lifted their legs, tipped back ever-so-slightly and began to pump their legs.
Not high, not fast. Just a slow, careful back and forth until they both reached about the same height. Then he looked over at her as he cautiously outstretched his hand and took hers, just for a second. They both beamed.
It was joy.
I stood there for a minute, and it hit me: that's it. That's the whole thing. Not a big, orchestrated kind of joy. Just an elderly couple, mid-afternoon, doing something a bit surprising.
It's part of why I wrote this week's blog post, Finding Joy (if you missed it, you can read it here. The short version is that joy rarely shows up on schedule or on cue. It shows up when we leave room for it.
Which is exactly what I built the Fall Reset Experience to do.
Not another program to perform. Not one more thing to optimize. Just a simple way to clear enough space in your fall that moments like the one on the swings actually have somewhere to land.
If you've been feeling like fall is already running away from you, this is the reset button.
Take Me to the Fall Reset Experience.
Here's to more unplanned, moments of joy this fall.
🩷 Warmly, Susan
